Last week, some of the best bartenders in the country gathered at No. 8 in Chelsea for a bourbon-laced smackdown. Woodford Reserve was in town to play host to its annual Manhattan Experience, a cocktail battle royale to see who could mix the best brown drink. This year, it was Travis Fourmont that was crowned the best in the country. The Detroit-based tender wowed with his Midnight Manhattan, which married two of our favorite beverage trends that are sweeping the scene right now: bourbon and amaro. A panel of judges that included Dave Wondrich named him the winner – he bested mixologsts from locations like Hoboken, Savannah and Portland.
The Woodford reserve was mixed with Italian amaro and a slew of bitters for a beverage that was at once elegant and complex. The recipe is below – if you’re getting tired of the same-old Manhattan, this is one ditty that won’t let you down.
Travis Fourmont's Midnight Manhattan:
2 oz. Woodford Reserve
½ oz. Italian Amaro
¼ oz. Bitter Orange Liqueur
¼ oz. Danish Cherry Liqueur
4 dashes House-Made Orange Bitters
