It’s not everyday that you get to sip a spirit that delighted Marco Polo. Yes, that Marco Polo. Sri-Lankan lushes have been brewing an arrack from the nectar of coconut flowers since Polo’s day, and he gave this spirit a callout in his travel diary Il Milione. Well, times have changed since then, but the spirit is still served in the country but strangely not available in the United States. That’s about to change with the launch of VSOA, a new label that will enter the US market from White Lion Imports.
The spirit is distilled and then matures for two years in native Halmilla wood – the spirit is very fruit forward and contains a wallop that may appeal to whiskey and rum drinkers. If you want to make like Marco Polo – or the 16th Century sailors who drank this stuff as part of their rations – keep your eyes peeled at your local liquor store. Bottles are available for $24.99 a pop.
