Summer 2012 is officially the summer of hibiscus. Just look at what is going on in your local Starbucks. The coffee chain recently rolled out a new Very Berry Hibiscus Handcrafted Beverage, a refreshing summer option that strays from the standard flavors you’d find in typical juice offerings. Hibiscus is earthy and savory – which makes it a choice option for those who don’t want to be walloped with sugar when they sip.
Sadly, Starbucks doesn’t serve hooch – so unless you want to bring a flask in (which is perfectly acceptable in our books), you can look for hibiscus drinks elsewhere. One of our favorites is the Hibiscus Fizz now being served as part of Spice Market’s new summer cocktail menu. The Cava-based cocktail can be served as a mimosa-alternative during brunch, and the sparing use of hibiscus adds just enough flavor to intrigue without overwhelming. The recipe is below if you want to take the hibiscus craze into your own hands and make this libation at your home bar.
