There’s a debate raging in the world of whiskey, and this one is not going to be resolved by sitting down at the bar for a few drinks. Recently, a businessman in the UK claimed that he found the original whiskey recipe used by none other than Mr. Daniel himself. Mark Evans said that he has a book of herbal remedies that was written in 1853. Apparently Evans had a relative that went to Lynchburg back in the day, and he’s claiming that it was John “Jack the Lad” Daniel.
The distiller is responding with a big “nuh-uh,” claiming that it was Jasper Newton ‘Jack’ Daniel – saying that the whiskey maker’s family was living in America long before 1854. Hmm – we’re not sure who we believe – but if Evans tries to start auctioning off the “original” recipe, we’re thinking it’s a sham. We’ll have a glass of whiskey and think on this one.
