Although we weren’t so thrilled with the Ace Hotel Lobby Bar, boy does The Breslin deliver. We stopped by for dinner the other night. Part of the fun in no-reservation spots like this is waiting for your table. Like The Spotted Pig, The Breslin has a great bar scene that is full of people worth knowing. In New York, waiting for an opportunity to tear into some lamb shin is the great equalizer.
We could have hung out all night by the bar. The space is warm and friendly, with nice touches (be sure to say hello to the beautiful high ceilings). With cask ales, cocktails, and a really solid wine program, there is almost no reason to head to a table.
Alas, you can’t really enjoy gorging on a Terrine board standing at the bar. The dining area is full of energy and buzz. Servers flitter around discussing the intricacies of pigs foot, while the wine gal makes sure your glass is never empty. The open kitchen is a nice touch, you’re likely to see Chef April Bloomfield racing around and keeping the ship afloat. Catching a glimpse of her determined / kick ass stare? That’s definitely part of the fun.
Like The Pig, we predict that The Breslin is going to be a solid “whenever” choice. Bored on a Tuesday? Head over to The ACE. Want a delicious snack on a Sunday afternoon? The peanuts cooked in fat will surely do.
The Breslin is located at 20 West 29th Street, in the Ace Hotel.
