Something we love about this job is the fact that every day is a holiday. There's always a celebration going on in the spirits world. If it's not Maraschino Cherry Month, it's Light Beer Week or National Jager-Bomb hour. One of these excuses to drink is coming up on August 16th. The date marks national rum day. Everyone should take a few moments to celebrate this momentous occasion by imbibing an excess of rum.
If you need some help, we have a handy recipe for Rum Punch from the folks over at Mount Gay. The spirit hails from Barbados and is still made using a pot still and a column still. Enough with the distillation details, and on to the drink! National Rum Day, like Christmas or that anniversary that you forgot, only comes along once a year. Be ready.
Bajan Rum Punch
19 oz Mount Gay Extra Old Rum
4 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Angostura Bitters
12 oz Grenadine Syrup
13 oz Simple Syrup
1 tsp Nutmeg
18 oz Water
Serves eight
Mix the lime juice, water and sugar syrup. Combine the mixture with grenadine syrup and Mount Gay Rum. Add the Angostura Bitters and stir well. Sprinkle with grated nutmeg and garnish with a cherry.
