LXTV’s Search for America’s Top Bartender entered its third week and the show got even kookier. Don’t get us wrong, we love their kind of kooky like we love a random night out on the town. This week the challenge was flair. Which bartender could most impress the judges with their showmanship while drink making?
What most impressed us was that all of them had very different ideas of showmanship. Some claimed that flair is not all about juggling bottles. We almost believed them – right up until the bottle juggling started. Graham kicked it off, with a high–spirited show of bottle balancing that was right out of Cirque de Drunken Bartender. The tenders who claimed that flair was more about “personality” need to get their asses to clown school.
Judge Fabrizio’s idea of flair? “I like the girls, I like their smiles.” Also – he insisted that his two fellow judges would like to see “more naked-ness.” NYC bartender Trevor didn’t hesitate to comply. He ripped his shirt off and promptly broke a glass while attempting to pour. Maybe he was going for one of those shirtless / Jewish “opa!” moments?
We like to root for the home team, but were a little put off when NYC bartender Jovino chose to freestyle rhymes for his flair. Fabrizio seemed to overlook his poetry skills, as he was too focused on the contestant’s shaved armpits. Yikes! We were more disturbed when Jovino rhymed the word “fine” with “fine”. Rhyming a word to itself? Unacceptable. God knows what else is shaved.
Kristin was the winner of this challenge. Her flair consisted of rubbing the martini shaker in her cleavage and shaking her booty. As she caressed her rump with the drink, she explained “The face you make when you shake, is the face you make when you (implied explicative).” We didn’t know they taught that in clown school.
The show took an interesting turn when they allowed the winning contestant to choose the loser. Definitely not as exciting as Top Chef. We love watching Padma spit out someone’s dish and emasculate them on the elimination line. Yes – we understand that some of the contestants on that show are women – but most of them are butchy enough to fear this castration.
LXTV's On the Rocks is not big on biographical details, and Kristin sent some random girl home. Maybe she was the one who put lemons down her chest? In any case – she had pigtails, and we bet Fabrizio will miss her.

Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.
