Last night Barfly felt the first bites of winter. Sad, we grasped at memories of summer. We ripped some grass out of the ground and tasted it, but it lacked that summery grit.
We reviewed our liquor cabinet. Whiskey? No, we would save that for those harsh cold nights when we accidentally leave our coat at the bar and have no concept of the weather. Gin? We like to savor our gin with olives and we had already drunkenly devoured all of them. Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka? Adorned with the image of a summer night on the bottle, it intrigued us. As northerners, we’ve only had cranberries with our vodka. That might be good for a cold, WASPy, Thanksgiving, but not for the Indian summer that we needed.
Foreign to this southern staple, we always thought sweet tea was just another way of saying ‘instant diabetes’. We’d shudder at passersby sucking down McDonald’s newly introduced behemoth jug of the drink. “Too scary,” we’d say as we diluted all “natural” cranberry juice with vodka. Ready to see what the fuss is all about, we poured Firefly over ice and bit the bullet.
What we discovered was that sweet tea vodka is delicious. No wonder those southerners have an affinity to the sugary sweetness. Easily gulped, Firefly barely has notes of alcohol considering its 70 proof standing. Smooth, it only tastes slightly sharper than the non-alcoholic version of the beverage. In order to get the full effect of a pseudo summer indoors, we put on our swimsuits and proceeded to throw back the entire bottle of Firefly on the rocks.
Tipsy on southern custom, we were slightly panicked when we discovered we had finished every drip drop of the bottle. Luckily we had the good sense to run over to McDonalds to acquire the necessary ingredient to make our own. McDonald’s sweet tea + any type of vodka in your collection = good enough sweet tea vodka. Not quite Firefly, not quite diabetes – the perfect way to deny winter’s clutches.
As we streaked up the street in our swim trunks, unknowing northerners sipping Ocean Spray in their cocktails shouted at us. “Don’t you know it’s winter now?!” No no, sweet northerner. It’s just the magical, summery effects of Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. We’re so glad we don’t have to eat grass anymore. Woo, let’s go - pool party!
firefly + water = perfection.
