It’s sad to say, but the Upper West Side dive Yogi’s pulled its final pint on Saturday night. It was our secret hope that a superhero of Drunktown would swoop in and save the bar from its scheduled demise. Unfortunately – the shuttering went down as scheduled. The building is set to be demolished (by our estimate, it will take at least 3 weeks for the contractors to clean up all those peanut shells), and the country bar is looking for a new home in the neighborhood.
Sources tell Barfly that the Tex-ified haunt went out with a braless-on-the-bar bang. There was a line out the door on Saturday night – plenty of miscreants came to pay their final respects to one of the neighborhood’s last true dives. The country music blared from the speakers and the hoe-down went on right up until the 4AM last call. We’re happy to report that the bar maintained its skanky smell until the final possible second.
Some friendly drunkards provided us with a peek into those Whiskey soaked final hours.
One correspondent awoke at 5pm the next day, and although shaking and promising never to drink again, emailed us:
It was crowded and full of stank. I felt uncomfortable. I’m really going to miss it. One of our Whiskey soaked sources (who indeed made it till last call) offered this final lament: In a couple of years, a corporate lawyer wearing Gucci loafers will tread over the very ground upon which so many of my sins lay festering among the roaches and stale beer of beloved Yogis. May the ghost of Yogi's, a bear no doubt, haunt that fellow’s portfolio for a lifetime.
We asked a few other attendees, and they have yet to respond. We can only take this as a good sign – they are likely still passed out from that last sweet and fleeting sip of Jack.
oh, it is great!
