The other night – Barfly put our reporter’s cap on (of course it’s made of the finest materials) and headed over to the Hawaiian Tropic Zone. We were intent on getting to the bottom of the latest scandal in Times Square Land– the pending sexual harassment lawsuit against the managers of the restaurant. Walking into the zone – we expected a typical (i.e. cheesy) setup that would do little to quell anyone’s Vitamin D deficiency. Instead, we were shocked by what we found, and it had nothing to do with this or that lawsuit. Much to our surprise, the Hawaiian Tropic Zone was nice. Our reporter's cap quickly fell to the side. The true investigation began as we started interrogating the cocktail list.
The HTZ (as the bikini-clad waitresses like to call it) doesn’t fall victim to the "Times Square is a hell-hole” stereotype. The space is chicly designed – put a translucent waterfall and some good lighting in anywhere and suddenly the term ‘tourist trap’ gets thrown out the window. The waitresses and bartenders are indeed dressed in bikinis and sarongs, but they all seem to dig it. We leaned over the bar to see what our bartender really thought. Was it annoying to wear a bathing suit every night? Did she feel pressured to sex it up?
“Are you kidding – it’s a blast! I was born in CA – so I’ve been wearing a bathing suit since I was 2.” She laughed cheerfully and threw in a few bottle tosses for good measure.
We looked around the room, the entire staff seemed to share this attitude. We were lucky to be there for one of the night’s two Bikini Pageants. The waitresses headed to an elevated catwalk to strut their stuff, one by one. They introduced themselves and the audience had the chance to vote for their favorite.
Ladies and Gentlemen – it is time to put your scoffs aside. Yes – they do not have a Bikini Pageant at Per Se, nor do they have scantily clad waitresses schlepping $21 glasses of wine at any of Mr. Boulud’s locations. Just because it’s not upscale doesn’t mean it’s not a blast. Maybe they should spice it up sometimes at those fancier haunts – if you are paying $37 for a rack of lamb then surely you should get at least a bit of a show. Here, although you may not expect it, a good show is what you’ll get. The menu - designed by Chef David Burke - ain’t too shabby either. The HTZ is stylish, silly, and most importantly, fun.
We chose the Prickly Pear Mojitio as our drink of the week. The cocktail list (designed by mixologist Jeffery Collins-Harper) has many offerings - but we were most impressed with this tart combination of Bacardi Light Rum, cactus pear puree, mint and lime. We didn’t get to finish our investigation on our previous visit – so we plan on heading back soon. No – not to get to the bottom of whatever nonsense in the news – we’ll leave that to the non-drunk reporters. We’re going to finish our interrogation of that list – there are still plenty of drinks that we didn’t get a chance to question.
just wanted to share that various erogenous zones are prickling right now, imagining this mojito coursing through my veins. well done!
