Do not be aghast ladies and gentlemen, but we must admit that we appreciate the bear market - if only for the furry metaphors it provides. After we finished stuffing our mattress full of gold-bullion and Monopoly dollars (we figure they can only appreciate in value with the way things are going), we decided to pay a visit to one of our favorite bears in the city – the gigantic clear sculpture at The Russian Tea Room. We would take the friendly inanimate object to task for his market shenanigans while getting a little fuzzy-wuzzy from the Tea Room’s new cocktail: The Cavitini.
In these difficult economic times, it is important to remember that a bit of extravagance can be just what the doctor ordered. Yes – a big monster of a bear is tromping through the stock market – but when you’ve spent the day watching your paltry life savings go out the window – what’s another 25 bucks for a little peace of mind (i.e. a dollop of the strong stuff). As we shared our concerns about the credit crisis with the glass statue we were struck by just how well the drink balanced the two most important necessities after a stressful day of disaster – luxury and potency.
The Cavitini is poured with Russian Imperial Vodka. The garnish is the kicker – two olives and a cucumber slice that is topped with 10 grams of Wild American Hackleback Caviar. The caviar/vodka combo is meant to highlight two of the most important Russian staples served by the Tea Room. More importantly –we think the drink brings up a typical Russian characteristic that the financial folks should seek to emulate – steely, ice-cold reserve in the time of crisis. We found it so reassuring that we immediately invested in a second glass.
By the end of our trip – we had reached an agreement with the glass bear (despite the waiter’s repeated insistence that ‘don’t you understand – the bear can’t hear you’). Yes – it’s good that the Fed is injecting cash, capital and the kitchen sink into the market, but why not send Wall Street a few Cavitinis? It might not provide the solution to all of the day’s problems – but it will certainly take the edge off. Most importantly is the reminder it provides - even though the world seems to be falling apart, there is a solution to be found, and still plenty of joys to be had (note: 93.4% of them are alcohol related).
Currently in the world there are many people who do not appreciate the beauty that exists in this world and those around us and each day take over to destroy a variety of ways.
Thank you very much for that information. I liked your blog, the topic is very interesting and I would love to be more aware.
