-It’s Independence Day! And, how do Americans use their freedom? They buy beer! Last 4th of July was the largest beer-selling holiday of the year – with over 23 million cases sold. Can Americans break the record this year? Though we prefer a martini, Barfly has stocked up with four pony kegs to do our part. We might not be able to drink them all this weekend, but they sure make adorable company.
-Speaking of records, the World Health Organization has announced that the U.S. “stands out with higher levels of use of alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis” than the rest of the world. What a week – this glory, and Antonio Sabato Jr. may win NBC’s Celebrity Circus (just don’t look down Antonio!). The founding fathers would be so proud.
-Overwhelmed by new found freedoms, Rubyfruit Bar and Grill will close. This West Village Lesbian bar was a place for women to gather and show off their tool-belts since 1994. The owners claim that the acceptance of lesbianism by society has lessened the need for a centralized enclave. The question remains: where will the lesbians go once Rubyfruit shutters? (Duh, the answer is Park Slope, you clearly haven't been paying attention).
