Looking out the window of the 1050 lounge at the Skyline Hotel gives one an entirely different appreciation for the New York skyline. Barfly says "bah!" (in our best crotchety old crone mumble) to those trendy hotel-bar rooftop lounges where you can see actual "buildings" making up the "skyline". We much prefer the view at this Hell's Kitchen hotel hot spot (well, we suppose luke-warm, they should have micro waved it longer).
Cutting through the shadows of the night are the glowing lights of the Desi Deli - the only sky anything that a Punjabi cab driver wants to see after a long shift. The brilliance of New York sky scrapers may be visible from outer space, but the spice on that Chicken Vindaloo can be sniffed out by even the drunkest of Wookies, galaxies away.
As we sipped our cocktail and admired the view, we became curious as to whom is on the board of hotel-naming committees in the city. It sure must be a fun job. Think of the brilliance: The Chelsea Savoy (Dutch for "sex pit"), The Maritime (European tourists LOVE to dress up in sailor outfits), but best of all The Skyline. The board members must have spent hours, silently staring out the window, pondering just the right adjective, the proper set of syllables, to capture the essence of the place. Feeling post modern and wily, the board did away with the sensible Kashmir Inn, and decided upon a much more glorious noun: Skyline. Though there may be no tall buildings outside that window, the skyline was certainly present in our heart.
Though the charms of this hotel bar are abundant, Barfly was most struck by the overall impression: silence. Complete, and utter silence. Just us, the bottle, the bartender (we count incomprehensible language barriers, i.e. Spanish, as a type of silence). We decided to focus on the lovely panorama before us. With a soothing silence like that, if we didn't choose a point and concentrate on it, the voices in our head may have told us to do things. Like think. And feel. And, perhaps even (dares't we say it, we dare, but only in a whisper), love.
Ratings: The Skyline Hotel: 10th between 49th and 50th
Not getting "invited upstairs" by any of the other patrons - 1 olive - We tipped well, only crashed one baby christening, and smiled as we gnawed the meat off the bone and pretended to like the chicken "wings". Yet we still didn't "see the skyline", if you know what we mean (for those of you who don't understand ironical air quotes, we're talking about sex).
The jugs of milk behind the bar - 3 olives -A little off putting at first, until we inquired what it was about. Apparently Vishnu gets thirsty too.
Drunk Wookies Hopped up on Spice -5 olives -Gives the term "Bollywood Spectacle" a WHOLE new meaning.

I really enjoy when I visit places like this because if you have a business travel you can relax yourself watching those incredible views and besides you can have a great gazebo if you are with somebody else.

It is extremely difficult to find a room with a view especially in a city like New York. You have a much luck if you could found something like that. Thanks for sharing these pics.

"cookie-sized computers with motion sensing, neighbor detection, graphical display, and wireless communication. They act in concert to form a single interface: users physically manipulate them - piling, grouping, sorting - to interact with digital information and media. Siftables provides a new platform on which to implement tangible, visual and mobile applicationsn". Lovely in and of themselves, but a wonderful display of imaginative uses of simple tech too.
