Review: Baa Baa Black History Month

February is black history month, and Barfly was interested in finding a celebratory event. After all, what other color so artfully complements the deep circles under our eyes? We looked up African drum classes and lectures on Oprah’s interpretation of Toni Morrison, but they all seemed so sober minded.

We decided that in the spirit of the underground railroad, we would call up our married girlfriend and head to a bar whose door is painted black.

Our married girlfriend clinks glasses with us. The lighting is just right to make her engagement ring sparkle. We are surrounded by other couples that seem to be on the verge of illicit. The low yellow glow of the bar perfectly illuminates a glint of flirtation in the eye. This is a place that you come to for sexiness without the sex. Everyone leans in close to the smell of pheromones and breathes deep. There are no thoughts of limbs intertwined, passionate kisses, or sloppy drunken interludes. We are all here just to sip our drinks, and savor the sweet smell.

Ratings – The Black Door

Aura –  4.4 olives – Gin and vermouth may be Barfly’s favorite combination, but low lighting and flirtation definitely come close.

Service – 2.5 olives – The waitress quickly closes out our tab after the first round. We suppose you can’t exist in that place between sex and no sex for too long.

Sharing in the Black Experience – 2 olives – How could one be so “oppressed” with such a delicious drink in their hand?

Martini – 4 olives – Perfectly enhances the pheromones floating around the room without letting them overwhelm. It is not quite full to the brim.
